Greg Gegenheimer was born in Houston, Texas, and is a lifelong Texan. He attended San Marcos Academy between 1962 and 1965, and graduated from Tulane University in 1972. In 1977, Greg Gegenheimer received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas and has lived and practiced in Austin, Texas ever since.
